Abstract:

Aims: Timely revision and updating of provincial bird checklists are of great significance for bird conservation and management. This study aimed to revise, update, and compile an updated checklist of bird species in Guizhou Province. 

Methods: Based on The Avifauna of Guizhou published in 1986, combined with multiple data sources, and following A Checklist on the Classification and Distribution of the Birds of China (Fourth Edition), we systematically revised and updated the distribution and taxonomic status of birds in Guizhou Province. 

Results: As of December 2025, there are 606 species of birds belonging to 21 orders, 88 families, and 303 genera in Guizhou Province, accounting for 40.27% of the total bird species in China. Compared with The Avifauna of Guizhou, 175 species have been newly recorded. Passeriformes are the most abundant, with 340 species in 51 families. There are 134 species of national key protected birds (24 species at first-level and 110 species at second-level), and 44 species of threatened birds; 3 species are assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), 17 as Endangered (EN), and 24 as Vulnerable (VU) in the China Red List of Biodiversity—Vertebrate Animals. Nine species are listed in Appendix I of CITES and 62 in Appendix II. Resident birds are the most abundant, with 281 species (46.37%). A faunal analysis of 373 breeding birds shows that the Oriental realm is dominant (252 species, 67.56%). Waterbirds account for 145 species and raptors for 54 species. 

Conclusion: This updated checklist provides an important reference for bird diversity conservation, threatened species management, and future monitoring research in Guizhou Province.
