AbstractMulun Karst Forest is situated at northwest of Huangjiang Maonan Autonomous County, Guangxi, China. Some results have been obtained after a preliminary survey. (1) It is a well preserved ecosystem of evergreen and deciduous broad-leaf mixed forest on the lime-stone of central subtropical zone. The forest areais 13 179. 2 ha. and the coverage is as high as 84%, that is rare in the world at the same latitute. (2) Alarge area of forest dominated by species Kmeria septentrionalis in different ages has been found. It is a newrecord of forest formation in China. (3) Its flora consists of the elements of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxiregion, Sino-Japan forest sub-realm, Holarctic realm. The subtropical floristic composition in the forest ismost abundant. The tropical composition with small part of temperate composition exist as well. (4)Species diversity in this ecosystem is mainly composed of 537 spp. of higher plants, 73 spp. of vertebrates,410 spp. of insects and 69 spp. of large fungi. Among them 12 spp. of plants and 19 spp. of animals areprotected at the National level. Nine new species of insects and 10 valuable underground terfas were identi-fied. The status and assessment of biodiversity in this area were described and the further conservation andsustainable use were suggested.
